Firefighters hope a behind-the scenes peek at a working station will encourage locals to volunteer.

Picton Volunteer Fire Brigade are giving the public the chance to take a look inside the station on Saturday 25 March with a special Family Open Day.

The moves comes as brigade bosses reveal the crews respond to about 100 emergencies every year.

It's not just on the front-line volunteers are needed, says Chief Fire Officer Wayne Wytenburg.

“The brigade responds to around 100 emergencies annually including fires, medical incidents, motor vehicle accidents and other requests for help.

“As well as emergency response, Picton volunteers also work with businesses to reduce risk and help to educate our community to remain safe in an emergency.

“There is a range of roles available. As well as firefighters, we need people who can provide support at incidents, help with administration and other tasks to keep our community safe.”

The special Family Open Day will include a free BBQ as well as the chance to meet the team and tour the trucks and equipment.

A range of activities will also be on offer.

“Discover what it takes to volunteer, and the benefits and training Fire and Emergency NZ provides volunteers,” Wayne says.

The open day will be held at brigade headquarters in Picton at 87 High between 10am and 2pm.
