Te Hoiere Matariki Light Display – Ngāti Kuia Stories & Taiao Experience
Join Ngāti Kuia and the Te Hoiere Project this Matariki for a unique illuminated night walk celebrating our stories, our connections, and our taiao.
Set within the ngahere at Te Hoiere (Pelorus River), this immersive light display will guide visitors along a gentle evening hīkoi, where light, sound, and storytelling bring to life the rich cultural narratives of Ngāti Kuia. Along the way, you’ll discover our deep relationships with the whenua and learn about local endangered species that call this special place home.
At the end of the walk, visitors are invited to explore our Pekapeka (long-tailed bat) classroom — an interactive space showcasing one of Aotearoa’s rarest native species and the important work being done to protect them.
Warm up and connect with whānau and friends after your journey with delicious kai available onsite from Rourou Tāwara food truck.
This experience is a celebration of Matariki — a time to reflect, reconnect, and look forward — grounded in the stories and stewardship of Ngāti Kuia.
Free transport is available on the opening night from Blenheim and Nelson on a limited basis - please email
