Marlborough’s leading indoor bowlers enjoyed a busy weekend playing the Marlborough Open Pairs and Open Fours tournaments at the Simcox Stadium in Batty's Rd.
On Saturday, 14 teams contested the Open Pairs event which was won by Steven Grant and Natasha Neal, beating Ken Wells and Chris Wooster by 9 points to 7 in a close final. The winners of the plate event were Glen and Jill Hurcomb who beat Colin Blake and Ricky Parkinson 12-3.
On Sunday the Open Fours event was played with the local Strand team of Brian Booker, Tony Jones, Debbie Wearing and John Lawrence winning the title 11-10 in a close game against Tony Hitchcock, Diana North, Bruce Hitchcock and Jan Ham.
Steven Grant, Kevin Wills, Kiri Bond and Natasha Neal won the plate event beating Colin Blake, Brian Goodwin, Rosemary Clark and Joy Hayes from the Grovetown club 6-4.
Interclub
Last Tuesday the fourth round of the Monthly Interclub competition was played, Clubs of Marlborough notching a good win over Grovetown by 7 games to 0. Blenheim South beat Witherlea 5 games to 2, and Strand beat Rapaura 4 games to 3.
With one round to play, COM and Blenheim South are leading on 41 pts, which will make an interesting finish for this competition. Strand is on 28 pts, Rapaura 23, Grovetown 20 and Witherlea 15.
Rep teams
The Marlborough selectors have announced the following teams to play in the annual rep fixture against Canterbury in Blenheim on Saturday September 10 at the Simcox Stadium: Kath Gilchrist, Daniel Henson Judi Symington and Debbie Wearing; Ian Henson, Kate Newport, Graham Mosley and Carolyn Parkes; Kevin Wills, Glen Hurcomb, Gary Parlane and Jill Hurcomb; Julian Adams, Chris Wooster, Kiri Bond and Colin Blake; Steven Grant, Tony Jones, Natasha Neal and Shirley Umbers; Lois Randall, Ken Wells, Graeme Smitheram and Vanessa Wall.
