Motorists traveling between Blenheim and Nelson should prepare for continued delays as road reconstruction work on State Highway 6 near Pelorus has been extended until mid-April.
Initially scheduled for completion this week, additional work requirements and changes to construction methods have pushed the completion date forward, says NZTA. The project now includes an extra two kilometers of road reconstruction.
NZTA says to expect delays of up to 20 minutes until March 26 as drainage, road reconstruction, and sealing work continues at the Havelock end. From March 27 until mid-April delays will reduce to 10 minutes as contractors shift focus to the Pelorus Bridge end.
A stop/go system and a temporary speed limit of 30 km/h will be in place during work hours (7 am – 6 pm, no work on weekends). Outside of these hours, the road will reopen to two lanes with a reduced 50 km/h speed limit.
In addition to the roadworks, nighttime maintenance on SH6 Pelorus Bridge is planned for Tuesday, 1 April, and Wednesday, 2 April, from 10:30 pm to 5 am. Contractors will be water blasting the bridge to prevent ice formation in colder months and replacing deck plank bolts.
Delays of up to 10 minutes can be expected.
