Glenn Mackay, a first-time entrant at the Rai Valley A&P Show, claimed a win in a unique competition for the vehicle with the most kilometres travelled. His 1986 Toyota Hilux LN65, a diesel double cab wellside, stood out with an impressive 550,000 kilometres on the clock.
“It’s still running on the original motor, but it’s on its third tray, second body, and has had some parts replaced,” Glenn explains. He’s owned the ute for 25 years and drives it daily from Nelson to Wakefield for work. “I’d rely on it to get me to the end of the country and back,” he adds.
According to Autolife NZ, the average distance driven by a car or ute in New Zealand is about 14,000km per year.
Despite the high mileage, Glenn isn’t concerned. “Many people have said their vehicle wouldn’t compare with the kilometres, but I’ve actually come across the same model as mine with 10-20 thousand more kilometres on it,” he says.
The Rai Valley Show, which Glenn had never attended before, proved to be an enjoyable experience. “It was a great A&P Show with a country feel,” he says. “A thoroughly enjoyable day out.”
Glenn’s Hilux is a testament to Toyota’s durability, and his win at the Rai Valley Show was a pleasant surprise for a first-time visitor.
