Kiwi shearer sets world record in South Africa
Aidan Copp, 39, has become the first person to hold world shearing records in three countries after setting a new two-stand nine-hour record for Merino lambs in South Africa. Adian and South African shearer Tienie du Plessis tallied 970 lambs. It was the first world shearing record attempt in South Africa since 2006. Adian grew up in West Melton, Canterbury, but now lives in New South Wales.
Severe drought leaves South Australian shearers jobless
Prolonged drought conditions in parts of Australia have pushed many farmers to their limits, forcing them to reduce their livestock numbers. For the past 14 to 18 months, drought-affected farmers have struggled to afford feed and water for their animals, and many can no longer sustain these rising costs. Consequently, the number of sheep requiring shearing has significantly declined, leaving experienced shearers without enough work. Many are now seeking employment interstate or overseas or leaving the industry altogether. It’s estimated that around 20% of the shearing workforce may exit the sector, creating a challenging period where young, aspiring shearers are eager to enter the industry—but face a lack of opportunities.
