The eight days of Pride Wairau ended on the weekend, bringing the second annual event to a successful close.
Artistic and short film exhibitions had plenty of support through the week and Tuesday’s comedy night with Eli Matthewson saw a sold-out crowd, while workshops throughout the week equipped Marlburians with tips on how to help young people feel comfortable in their own skin.
Saturday’s well-attended Seymour Square rally and Taylor River walk attracted a counter-protest from Nelson-based Destiny Church affiliated groups Man Up and Legacy Sisterhood, who left after having backs turned on them by Pride supporters.
Saturday night’s event saw the takeover of the Yard Bar, which brought a big city party vibe to town with international DJ Atarangi keeping a full dancefloor around until 2am, before the event was farewelled from Small Town Winery on Sunday night.
In a comment to the Marlborough Weekly, Pride Wairau’s organising committee were pleased “our festival was bursting with aroha, connection and unapologetic pride”.
“To see people journey from near and far to celebrate diversity, inclusion, and identity in our beautiful region was both humbling and exhilarating.
“The aroha we witnessed at every corner of this festival was powerful and we are so proud to have created a space where that love could shine so brightly.
“We have absolutely loved bringing you the 2025 festival and this is only the beginning - until then, keep shining, keep showing up, and keep spreading the love”.
