The previous few days inclement weather cleared just in time for a full round of senior A rugby to be played today.
Two games were staged back-to-back on the Lansdowne Park number one ground, rugby headquarters holding up well despite Friday’s deluge.
First up, Central took on Renwick, who dominated the early exchanges, eventually pushing out to a commanding 27-5 lead. However, the tide quickly turned in the second spell, the Blues dominating field position and possession to take the honours 34-27.
Showing the way for the winners was lock Liam Young, who demonstrated a wide variety of skills, along with Francis Roebeck and Logan Robinson.
Renwick midfielder Peceli Denicaucau, halfback Jarrod Ferguson, loosie Seb Wilson and replacement Easi Qalo impressed for the Mud Dogs.
The second match was also tight, Pelorus claiming just their second win of the season, downing Harlequins 22-19.
Both sides scored twice in the first 40 minutes, the scores locked at 12-12 at the break. After oranges Pelorus made a decisive move, picking up a converted try and a penalty to move ahead by 10. Despite trying all sorts of attacking ploys, the home side were unable to bridge the gap, a combination of poor options and tenacious Bojacks’ defence leaving them to settle for a last-minute try which ensured a bonus point.
Billy Eising, Blade Campbell and TK Manawatu stood out up front for Pelorus, Tyler Williams and Dylan Hansen solid performers in the backline.
Ethan Kahui was impressive at 10 for the Quins, while Jordy Taylor proved a tidy halfback. Michael Leger Kula and Michael Stringer carried strongly.
The day’s final encounter was staged at Spring Creek’s Awarua Park with the home side, Moutere, getting up for their first win of the season.
They downed Awatere 17-13, putting a dent in the Tussock Jumpers’ hopes of making the end-of-season play-offs.
