There’s a quiet change happening in the Marlborough optometry world, but if you blink, you might miss it. Matthews & Hassan Optometrists have recently taken over the long-standing Noel Templeton Optometrists, but the message from both parties is clear: “This is a gentle transition between two well-established, like-minded practices,” says Francis Hassan, co-owner of Matthews & Hassan. “Things will continue just as they have been.”
For over 30 years, Noel Templeton has provided eye care to generations of Marlborough locals. His name has become synonymous with approachable, professional service – something Francis and his team deeply respect. “Noel has always had a fantastic reputation, and we’ve admired what he’s built. He’s a well-known figure in the community, and he’s earned the trust of a huge number of people over the years.”
In fact, the entire process began when Noel himself approached Francis around Christmas last year. “We were both at an event at The WineKitchen in Marlborough when Noel asked if we were looking to expand,” recalls Francis. “I told him, yes, we actually were, and he said, ‘Then we need to chat.’ It was an extremely amicable beginning, and things naturally progressed from there. We later visited him at his clinic, and he told us he’d never heard a bad word about our business. That was a big part of why he felt comfortable approaching us. It really meant a lot, especially because we could say exactly the same about him and his practice. It showed us that he genuinely cares about his clients, just as we do. That shared mindset really resonated.”
Crucially, Noel isn’t stepping away. He’ll continue working at the practice and seeing clients as usual, providing the same reliable service locals know and trust. “Noel has done a brilliant job, and we’re here to keep that going,” says Francis. “We’ll be offering the same services, with the same friendly team, and we’re proud to have Noel still working alongside us.”
Sharon Newport, who has worked beside Noel for over 30 years, is now leading the practice. “She’s an integral part of the culture Noel created. With her at the helm, that same vision and care will carry on. It really is business as usual.”
Matthews & Hassan, already well-known in the region, share the same people-first values. “The timing just felt right, and the shared focus on eye health between both practices made the transition feel like a natural fit,” says Francis. “Martyn Crossley, another local optometrist, has joined the Noel Templeton team as well, and on top of that, both practices will use Zeiss lenses – one of the world’s leading spectacle lens companies, so clients can continue to expect exceptional, all-round optometry services.” That consistency in care, values, and service is what made this shift feel seamless for everyone involved.
For long-time owner Noel Templeton, the decision to step back from the business came naturally. “The time felt right,” he says, adding that the shared values and professional alignment between the practices made the choice clear. “It takes a lot of the workload and pressure off! And the fact that Francis is local and a very good practitioner gave me the confidence to approach them. I know my patients are in very good hands.” So far, the transition has been smooth sailing. “It has all worked out very well, nice, simple and straightforward,” Noel says.
Sharon echoes the sentiment, noting that continuity has been key. “People can expect to see the same friendly faces when they come through our doors,” she says. “Myself, along with Theresa and Kathy – our experienced dispensing opticians – and Nicole at reception, are all here looking after our patients. We look forward to continuing on with the same level of exceptional service.”
Looking ahead, Francis says he’s excited to continue the ethos both practices were built on. “Noel and I are both passionate about providing patient-centred care as health professionals, and we share the same moral code, so to speak. That’s what’s made this such an easy process. We also look forward to connecting even more with the community, that’s always been a strong focus for both of us. We’re proud to support the Tasman Mako, local sports teams, local golf tournaments, and the Marlborough Academy of Dance. Giving back means the world to us. It may sound corny, but this job doesn’t really feel like work. We get to help some lovely people, work with a great team, and form genuine connections. That’s what it’s all about.”
When asked what sets their business apart, Francis is quick to answer. “Our point of difference is our patient-centred philosophy. Our staff and service are second to none. Our products are the epitome of quality, and we’ve invested heavily in state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment. But more than anything, I’d say we’re good with people. They invest in us, and we invest in them. We want every patient to have a great experience, backed by the best diagnostic tools and top-quality products from leading independent frame makers around the world.” For the future of Marlborough’s optometry, it’s not about change, it’s about continuation. The same friendly faces, the same trusted care, and a future that remains firmly focused on people.
