The Navigators under-16 boys’ rugby league side represented the region with pride and passion at the NZ Warriors South Island 16s and 18s tournament in Oamaru in early July.

The young Navigators, operating under the Te Tauihu Rugby League banner, won three of their four games, their only defeat coming in a hard-fought final against Canterbury.

The top of the south side beat Otago 22-0, Aoraki 14-6 and West Coast 12-6 to book a place in the tournament decider, which they lost 28-0 to the title favourites.

Navigators coach Charlie Tikotikoca said, “our boys played with strength, passion, and skill, showing everyone that Tasman belongs in league”.

“Although the final didn’t go our way, the boys showed true heart throughout the tournament. Hold your heads up high – you did Tasman proud, and you’ll get them next year,” he added.

Several of the Navigators side were named in the 16s Boys Good Person Good Player Team, underlining their commitment to sportsmanship throughout the tournament.

Navigators’ mentors Charlie and Jack James were voted joint winners of the Boys 16s Coaches of the Tournament award.

At the conclusion of the tournament several Navigators players were included in the Scorpions side to represent Southern Zone Rugby League.

They are: Bradley Kershaw, Vilikesa Nawaqavonovono, Ahurei Devon-James, Reiahumanaru Pouri Lane, Teatule Temanu, Kalaneti Saumaki, Joey Aukafolau, Kymani Tikotikoca-Li.
