Like ogres and onions, many layers contribute to the latest stage offering from Marlborough’s combined colleges playing at the ASB Theatre this week.
'Shrek – The Musical' opened on Tuesday night, however the theatre was a hub of activity throughout Sunday and Monday as final dress rehearsal preparations took place.
The first impression of this show is its dedication to stagecraft, which shines through committed singing, dancing, accents and acting accompanied by top-tier lighting, props and costumes under the watchful eyes of producer Ngaire Searle and director-choreographer mother-daughter duo Jeannie and Claudia Mark.
The voice and presence of Lyriks Caldwell as Shrek powers through the makeup and prosthetics even while dressed in layers of warm clothes under the hot stage lights.
Theodore McFadden as Donkey and Arthur Pineiro as Lord Farquaad bring their quirky characters to life with all the expressive fun and flair expected of those roles.
Princess Fiona, played mostly by Nova Rino, brings a larger-than-life presence to the green dress, floating beautifully between song and speech while being intimidating when required.
While the on-stage work is top-notch, the accompanying orchestra led by musical director Robin Randall alongside the production’s student prop and lighting team lifts the full show presentation to new heights.
The presentation of the dragon prop especially toes the line between being intimidating and inviting, which is full credit to the art department involved.
Shrek - The Musical is a fun night out, designed for the whole family to experience the animated classic on stage.
The region’s young people have put on a full theatre performance to be applauded.
