The quiet rural roads of the Awatere Valley will come alive on Sunday, August 24, as runners, walkers, and supporters gather for the annual Tussock Run, a community fundraising event for Seddon School that has grown into one of Marlborough’s most anticipated late-winter fixtures.
Organisers say the 2025 event will again offer three distances, 5km (Hybrid), 10.5km Hybrid), and 15km, ensuring a challenge for seasoned athletes, casual joggers, and families alike.
“It’s about more than just the run. It’s a celebration of our community, our scenery, and our school. Every entry makes a difference for our students” explains Andrea Zahn, Friends of Seddon School Chair.
From Start Line to School Fundraiser
First held more than a decade ago, the Tussock Run began as a way to combine outdoor activity with community fundraising. Today, it attracts participants from across Marlborough and beyond, many drawn by the rugged beauty of the valley’s tussock-covered hills and the event’s warm, small-town atmosphere.
All proceeds go directly to Seddon School, helping fund projects, equipment, and opportunities for local children. The run has also become a showcase for local sponsorship, with generous contributions from local businesses backing the event. Without the incredible support from our valued sponsors, the Tussock Run wouldn’t be the huge success it is” says Vicky Underwood, Tussock Run Committee member.
The Course and the Crowd
The 15km option offers the most demanding terrain, rewarding runners with expansive views across the valley. The 10.5km “quarter marathon” balances challenge with accessibility, while the 5km Flyer caters to beginners, families, and even parents with prams.
Spectators and participants can expect more than just race action. The school grounds will host food stalls, silent auctions, raffles, goody bags and spot prize draws, elements that have become as much a part of the tradition as the run itself. The silent auction and raffles tempt attendees with generous prizes donated by local businesses, and the generous spot prizes make prizegiving worth the wait. Goody bags and a remarkable selection of donated prizes make the odds of going home with a treat very high.

Community at the Heart
For many locals, the Tussock Run is more than an athletic event, it’s a midwinter boost to community morale. Residents and school families line parts of the course offering encouragement or help out at on stalls, while local businesses donate prizes and goods.
“The energy on the day is incredible,” said one long-time participant, Vanessa Barker. “You see everyone from kids to grandparents out there, and at the end of it all, the money raised goes straight back into our community.”
With entries already open, organisers are expecting another strong turnout in 2025. Whether aiming for a personal best or simply enjoying a walk among friends, the Tussock Run promises a mix of fitness, fun, and fundraising in one of New Zealand’s most picturesque rural settings.
