It is time to acknowledge Kiwis doing great things, big or small, across the country.
Entries for the 2026 Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year Awards Ngā Tohu Pou Kōhure o Aotearoa close at midnight this Sunday August 24, and organisers are searching for more nominations from across the top of the South Island with the region only contributing three percent of entries so far.
Auckland leads the charge with 28% of entries so far, followed by Canterbury (12%) and Wellington (10%), with strong representation from Taranaki, Waikato, Manawatū Whanganui, Bay of Plenty and Northland.
Community service, advocacy, and innovation are standout themes, with nominees dedicating themselves to mental health, youth empowerment, environmental protection, cultural preservation, and ground-breaking solutions to social and economic challenges.
Te Koruru Patron of the Awards, Miriama Kamo, says this year’s nominations reveal an inspiring cross-section of Aotearoa.
“From the far north to the deep south, we’re seeing extraordinary New Zealanders put forward – people making their mark in sports, community, arts, the environment, and technology.
“But we know there are even more unsung heroes out there. We want every region represented, every story told, every voice heard - nominating takes just two minutes, but the recognition lasts a lifetime.”
Among this year’s notable nominees so far are Founder of KidsCan Dame Julie Chapman DNZM, mental health advocate Jazz Thornton, and Ruby Tui.
Nominations can be made in one or more of the seven categories by any member of the public over 15 years of age until Sunday August 24, 2025 at nzawards.org.nz.
