WILLIAM ‘WOODHORSE’

Marlborough Riding for the Disabled are hoping supporters will saddle up this September to put some ‘fun’ in fundraising.

The inaugural Hobby Horse Tournament fundraiser, planned for Sunday September 14 at MRDA’s Taylor Pass Road arena, will be accompanied by a barbecue lunch provided by Gramado’s Restaurant.

There will be wine to settle the competitive nerves ahead of taking to the arena, with teams of three competing on hobby horses across the equestrian disciplines of dressage, showjumping and an obstacle race.

MRDA’s Joanne Ross says funds raised will be “phenomenal” for the organisation’s local support, but also a chance for people to have a good laugh. Entries close on Sunday, August 31.

“We would see hobby horse competitions becoming more trendy all over social media, both as a competitive sport and as in tongue-in-cheek videos too,” she suggests. “Having a chat with the staff here, we saw it as chance for a great day up here at the ‘Ranch’ to have a team and community bonding experience while supporting the work we do at MRDA.

“It could just be an open day, but we wanted to add an element of craziness and so I hope likeminded people see it as a great way to support us, while not taking themselves too seriously.”

Jo has already roped in many supporters but is eager to see the field grow.
VetLife Alabama Road’s Dr David Howes, who will be taking to the arena, says “we can‘t wait for the big day because we see the fabulous work they do daily, the care they have for both animals and clients, but it will also be a fantastic day highlighting the RDA organisation.”

“We’ve been a little forced into competing by Jo,” laughs Maeve Maloney, a fellow staff member and competing rider. Riders shouldn’t be afraid of doing their best because there will be horse doctors on site, but it’s such an important day and a cause that deserves support by everyone.”

Fancy dress, costumes and supporters are encouraged and hobby horses can either be creatively made by using recycled or repurposed materials – with a best horse prize up for grabs – or hired on the day.

“It’s always getting harder to raise money these days ... and so we came up with a great reason for people to come down, see it in person and connect our support communities,” says Joanne.

“But there will be pre-tournament advice and instructions for the competing riders ... the big one is the dressage instructions - so it’s definitely still a bit competitive.”
Competitors must be over 18, but spectators of all ages are welcome.
