Vasu’s pen for a purpose

Combining her two homes, Vasu Singh’s Indian-style, New Zealand-inspired ink art will be one stop not to miss on the Alzheimers Marlborough Art Trail.

And she is thrilled that, over September 20-21, she’ll join fellow artists showing both their art and their support for those living with or impacted by an Alzheimers diagnosis.

“India is known for really intricate, detailed handicrafts, and I wanted to find parallels of traditional subjects and motives in New Zealand”, she says.

“Instead of peacocks or other traditionally Indian subjects, I’ve drawn fantails, tuatara, blue whales and a nest, which always reminds me that home is where you make it.

“Artists always say that we want to do more in the community, or we want our work to be seen in the community, so when you tie it up with an awesome cause like fundraising for Alzheimer Marlborough it exposes both our work and an incredibly worthwhile cause to all the right people.

“Having my employer and other stores opening store windows to showcase both, it’s closing the loop of art and business both joined in fundraising.”

Lynfords Furniture’s Hamish Greenwood was happy to have Vasu’s work displayed for the Alzheimer’s Art Trail and hoped to see a busy weekend around the region.
“It’s for a great cause, it’s a beautiful addition which brings people into the store and showcases the talent we have in the province and in our staff.”

And while Vasu considers herself lucky to have not had Alzheimers impact her friends and family yet, the efforts she’s seeing behind the Art Trail “blows my mind”.

“This is so unique to Marlborough ... seeing all the effort in helping and organizing so many artists and volunteers for giving support to people and families in need, it’s really special to be involved.”
