Final preparations are underway for the Harcourts Marlborough Kids Duathlon, happening this Sunday, October 12 at Brancott Estate Vineyard, and organisers say there’s still time to join in.

While online registrations have now closed, limited on the day entries will be available from 8.30am ahead of the 9am race briefing.

Run by Fairhall School and its supporters, the duathlon is now in its 19th year and has become a highlight on Marlborough’s family event calendar. It’s not just a fundraiser for the school’s Education Outside the Classroom programme, it’s a celebration of community, confidence, and fun.

Committee chair Tom O’Connor says families shouldn’t hesitate to come along and give it a go.

“The Duathlon is about fun, not first place. Whether your child is a confident athlete or trying a race for the first time, everyone is welcome. If you’ve been thinking about entering, just come along a little earlier on Sunday and join in.”

The event attracts competitors from across the top of the South Island, including Kaikōura, Nelson, and Murchison. Children aged 4 to 18 can choose from two course options: Run 1km/Bike 3km/Run 1km or Run 2km/Bike 5.5km/Run 1km, while the youngest participants can take part in the ‘Beat the Bear’ fun run, a 500m loop designed for ages 4–7 (often with parents jogging alongside).

Every finisher earns applause and a sense of pride, with the focus firmly on participation rather than podiums. Families can enjoy a festive atmosphere, complete with a BBQ and baking stall, while cheering on the racers.

A standout feature each year is the prize draw, which includes a brand-new bike and helmet donated by Bikefit Marlborough, plus a $500 prize for the school with the highest participation rate.

The Harcourts Marlborough Kids Duathlon is proudly supported by Harcourts Marlborough, More FM, Bikefit Marlborough, Meaters, BB signs, and many generous local businesses.
