Marlborough’s spectacular new destination celebrating the best of wine and food from over 50 of the region’s producers, opened its doors recently to plenty of “oohs” and “aahs” from those at the grand opening.
Equal parts tasting room, cultural showcase, and hospitality venue, this is a world-class hub of wine, food and culture that captures the essence of New Zealand’s most celebrated wine region under one roof. The opening event gave guests a taste of just how significant this venue will be for the region.
The foyer immediately sets the scene with a spectacular chandelier lighting installation inspired by twisting grapevines, designed by Rose McKenzie and brought to life by Steve Trevella. The piece became a natural gathering point, with every guest pausing to gaze up in admiration. It is a fitting welcome to a venue built on artistry, craftsmanship and storytelling.
Inside, the buzz of excitement was palpable. Curated displays featured wines from across Marlborough, including labels without cellar doors, alongside regional gins, beers, cheeses, and seafood. The WineEmotion dispensers were a huge hit, allowing people to sample a wide variety of Marlborough’s finest wines. Guests were treated to a wide variety of cheese and charcuterie platters along with fresh seafood, hinting at the seasonal experiences to come.
The décor is both sophisticated and warmly welcoming, inviting you to relax and stay a while. The private tasting rooms also drew plenty of attention, promising intimate, elevated encounters with Marlborough’s finest produce. What better place to have a board meeting than in the Wine + Food Experience boardroom, with delicious food and beverages close at hand. The soon to be opened Oak and Ivy Restaurant adds even more to be excited about.
Mayor Nadine Taylor summed up the mood with a smile: “This isn’t just the icing on the cake, it is the cake itself.” Her words reflected the general feeling that the Wine + Food Experience is destined to become a primary destination for both the local community and visitors. With a fireside lounge, terraces, and versatile event spaces, the venue is designed for everything from casual gatherings to corporate ones.
