The Marlborough Historical Society celebrated thirty-five years last Wednesday since their Provincial Museum and Archives building was officially opened by Governor General Sir Paul Reeves.
Society volunteers, led by Kevin Andrews and the late Derek Cordes, raised half a million dollars and built the museum at Brayshaw Park to house the artefacts and archives they had been saving, with the 35th celebrations also seeing the opening of the newest textiles exhibition, “It’s a Wrap”.
Current President Paul Davidson said it was a fantastic effort at the time.
“Most other museums at the time were built by local or central government - I doubt if there is another all-volunteer museum of this size anywhere else in New Zealand”.
