Both of Marlborough’s Tasman Premier League cricket teams suffered losses on Saturday.

The ever-present batting woes once again contributed to the reversals, the Dolphins unable to run down a moderate target at Horton Park, while the Falcons failed to set a defendable total in Nelson.

Playing against WTTU, the Dolphins bowled and fielded well to restrict the visitors to 164, dismissing them in the 44th over. Top scorers were Logan Andrews (33 from 44) and Chethana Dissanayake (32 not out from 40).

Jaden Adams (3-44), Piers Landon-Lane (2-43) and Josh Poole (2-21) all contributed strongly, bowling their full complement of 10 overs apiece, while Luke Holdaway snared 2-9 from just four overs.

The home side’s reply was underwhelming, being dismissed for just 82 in the 30thover. The Dolphins were unable to get any decent partnerships established, 17 to Max Armstrong and 14 to Kirk Nicholas their highest individual scores. Mitchell Grant claimed 6-21 to show the way with the ball.

The other match, played at Ngawhatu, was much closer, home side ACOB eventually reaching their target with one wicket in hand.

Batting first the Falcons were dismissed for 130 in the 43rd over, opener Matthew Stretch (35 from 41) and number nine batsman James Bell (28 from 59) the only batters to regularly trouble the scorers. Vinodh Perera (4-19 from seven overs) was the chief destroyer as the visitors battled to register a target they could bowl at.

Despite their batting woes, the Falcons nearly did just that. At one stage they had ACOB reeling at 9-87 but were unable to break a stubborn last wicket partnership, dominated by an unbeaten 48 from Liam Baird, which saw the home side edge across the line in the 41st over.

Sam Boyce (3-21 from 10), Andrew McCaa (3-30 from 10) and Zariab Kakaria (2-15 from seven) were among the wickets but, having done much of the hard work, the Falcons were unable to close this one out.

In the other matches Wolves beat Wakatu and Stoke Nayland downed Nelson College.
