Whether through painting, pillows or photos, Oceania Redwood retirement village residents have brought together their artistic passions. Photo: William Woodworth.
Retirement residents have been shining a light on their own passions and learning more about their neighbours through a village-wide art exhibition.
Fourteen Oceania Redwood independent living residents took over the village’s community room for three days last week, to both show off the talents within the village and learn more about one another’s passions.
Chair and secretary respectively of the Retirement Villages’ Resident’s Association Vivian Dunlop and Carole Lake were two of the exhibitors, Carole’s photography and Vivian’s drawings on display alongside intricate needlework, knitted blankets, paintings, photography displays and more.
“Some people have had these things sitting around at home, and they’ve brought them along - some of the stuff is new or from their travels over their years”, says Vivian.
“A lot of work and debate has gone into deciding what they’ll bring over. It’s actually not even our idea - residents came to us with the idea to have an exhibition of the artistic talents that people have throughout the villas.
“The last few days on display gave us a little glimpse further into each other and has been quite connecting for us all. It’s been quite lovely to see this showcase of our neighbours over the years and what they have either made or experienced”, says Carole.
“There are some beautiful needlework and handicraft pieces, but for some of our residents their hands can’t do that anymore so being able to come out and share our passions is special.”
