What should people be aware of regarding the risks or limitations of cosmetic treatments?

I think it’s essential to conduct thorough research before making a commitment. In the beauty and cosmetic tattooing industry there are no mandatory training requirements, making it challenging for individuals to discern what practices are appropriate and which are not. Consider scheduling consultations with several different professionals to gather insights and verify qualifications, treatments and techniques. Take your time and don’t rush into a decision, as this is a significant long-term investment.

How should clients decide if cosmetic tattooing is the best option for them?

I believe that cosmetic tattooing is generally a great option for most individuals. However, if you find that the upkeep of other beauty services is overwhelming or if you're feeling less confident about your appearance, it's beneficial to consult with a professional. My goal is to enhance and restore your natural features rather than override them.

For people who aren’t sure where to start, what first steps do you recommend?

Chat with a professional – even if it’s just for half an hour to go through some overall goals you’re wanting to achieve. From there you will have a good foundation to build on. You don’t have to go full steam ahead straight away. Progression is key.

What’s the best way for clients to assess whether a provider is credible in their practice?

A comprehensive consultation is essential. It allows you to get to know the professional and assess whether they are the right fit for your needs and provides an opportunity to evaluate their workspace for cleanliness and organisation. It's also important to verify their training and health and safety certifications, which should be prominently displayed or readily available during the consultation. Their marketing on social media can also be insightful; look for images showcasing their work – not only immediate before-and-after photos but also healed results across various age groups and skin types.

How important is aftercare?

Pre-procedure preparation and aftercare are crucial for achieving optimal long-term results for clients. Properly caring for your tattoo during the healing phase is essential; this includes applying sunscreen, maintaining hydration in the area, and scheduling follow-up visits every 12 to 24 months for refresh sessions to ensure the tattoo stays well-defined and retains good colour. The pigments currently used are formulated to gradually fade from the skin more softly and quickly rather than the heavier alternatives previously available.
