Marlborough’s newest mountain biking event, the Grape & Gravel: Great Bike Race, takes place at Leefield Station in the Waihopai Valley on Saturday.
Described by organisers, Leefield Station and Marisco Wines, as “a truly unique mix of epic scenery, local flavour, and challenge”, riders have the opportunity to weave through vineyards, farmland and the rugged Waihopai Valley foothills.
After trialing the off-road trails for about 40 riders last year, it was decided to open the venue to the public this year.
Offering a range of race categories, the event, which follows a six-lap relay format over an 8km gravel course, provides opportunities for riders of all capabilities to partake – from weekend warriors to those just out for a good time on the trails. There are both e-bike and traditional bike categories, suitable for all ages and abilities.
There is more on offer than just biking too - with wine tastings, a live DJ, a BBQ featuring Leefield Station produce, plus coffee and refreshments available throughout the day.
“The venue is enormous so to create atmosphere, you need more riders. We are hoping for at least three figures,” says Marisco’s General Manager of Winemaking Matt Mitchell.
The avid mountain biker is the driving force behind the event and just hopes he gets the chance to line up as well.
Grape & Gravel will be staged at Leefield Station, 1219 Waihopai Valley Road, RD6, Blenheim on Saturday, 22 November.
