Lawrence MacDonald was honoured as the Te Pataka o Wairau 2025 Local Legend at the Māori Night Market in Seymour Square on Friday evening.

Lawrence says he was “very surprised to be able to receive this honour”.

“I try and help our people where I can, as everybody should strive to look after their loved ones, their neighbours, there’s somebody down the street, no matter, and just help everybody else,” he says.

Award presenter Dr Lorraine Eade says Lawrence embodies manaakitanga, aroha and unwavering dedication to whānau and community.

“What truly sets Lawrence apart is his warmth – he brings humour, light and joy into every space he enters. Whether through a joke, a story or simply his presence, he lifts the spirits of those around him and reminds us of the beauty in being together.

“For his unwavering service, his leadership and for the laughter he gifts us so generously.”
