State Highway 1 between Kaikōura and Blenheim is expected to remain closed into the evening, and the scheduled closure of Weld Pass has been delayed, following a fatal motorcycle crash at Waipapa Bay this morning.
Emergency services were called to the scene at 10am and remain at the site as of 4pm. Police have confirmed the crash was fatal.
Strict closure points are in place at Ward, south of Blenheim, and about 2km south of the Waiau Toa/Clarence River.
“Soft closure” points are operating at Riverlands, just outside Blenheim, and at the north end of Kaikōura to warn drivers of the closure and lack of detour options.
Motorists are advised to delay travel or use the inland route. Southbound traffic should take SH63 from Blenheim, turn left onto SH6, then SH65, then SH7 before rejoining SH1 near Waipara. The reverse applies for northbound traffic.
The Weld Pass work will now be closing from Friday 28 November at 1am.
UPDATE: 4.50pm - SH1 has been reopened, Waka Kotahi urge patience in your travels this afternoon.
