Both of Blenheim’s colleges are putting an early call out for local businesses to put their hands up to host students as part of their Gateway work experience programmes.

Gateway is funded by the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) and designed to enable students to undertake workplace learning in a wide range of occupations at no cost.

Marlborough Girls’ College Careers and Gateway Administrator Liz Maw says the requests from students are so varied in both schools that they’re open for all opportunities.

“We get all sorts of requests from the Gateway students - it’s the perfect opportunity for them to have a look into and experience a possible future career pathway.

“As part of the Gateway programme students must complete 10 hours work experience, so we are always on the lookout for placements that not only are productive, but interesting too.

“Areas we sometimes struggle with are the trades, especially building and construction; electrical and automotive trades, but we’re open for all enquiries as it’s all about matching up the student to the opportunity.”
