The Cook Strait Classic Trophy resides in the Mainland after the United Country and Vineyard Cricket Club scored a narrow win over visitors Wellington Wanderers at the Black Cottage ground recently.
In a reduced 40-over clash, UCVC batted first, scoring a formidable 244-8, Wanderers falling just short in reply, restricted to 223.
The home side’s innings was based around a 129-run partnership between Tarin Mason and Kyle Heagney, the former notching a superbly-timed 124, while Heagney contributed 43. Former All Blacks lock Jason Eaton was the pick of the visiting attack, taking 4-54 from eight overs.
Wanderers started their run chase positively and were right in the contest at 92-2 after 20 overs. However, a cluster of wickets through the middle overs, despite a brisk half century from Jeremy Dean, meant they were constantly chasing the run rate from there.
Duncan Anderson was the most successful of the local bowlers, snaring 3-34 from eight overs. Mason completed a fine allround effort with 2-29, also from eight, while Fionn Heagney and Dave Clouston bowled economically.
In a couple of weeks’ time the teams meet again, this time under lights at Seddon.
