Lightning Le Brun
Remy Le Brun was a standout at the recent South Island Masters Track & Field Champs staged in Nelson, breaking three South Island championship records in the M35 Age Group. He won the 60m in 7.27sec, the 100m in 11.41 and the 200m in 23.89, lowering his own records in the latter two events. Dave Hansen, in the M45 grade, racked up four wins – taking out the 100m in 13.03, the 400m in 57.37, the shot put with 11.46m and the discus with a throw of 37.32m. Tracey Sims, in the W55 group, was second in the 1500m, won the 3000m in 17.10.65 and placed second in the 5000m. Carey Dickason, in the W70 grade, won the long jump with a leap of 2.24m, came second in the hammer, then won the triple jump with 5.41m and took out the women’s pentathlon (outdoor) with 1106 points.
Hawke Cup reunion
Sharing memories and a beer or two will be high on the agenda for members of the Hawke Cup-winning Marlborough senior men’s rep cricket side from 2011. The team, which won the prestigious trophy in Alexandra, will gather together in Blenheim next weekend, 6-8 February, marking the 15th anniversary of their achievement, just the third time Marlborough has won the symbol of New Zealand minor association cricketing supremacy. A dinner and exhibition game is planned.
Mandy makes netball grade
Marlborough netball umpire Mandy O’Malley has been selected for the Mainland Netball Umpire Squad. Mandy umpires regularly across a variety of local grades and is well respected by the players.
Table tennis centenary
One hundred years of table tennis in Marlborough will be celebrated in October. Organisers urge ‘players past and present to come together to mark 100 years of rallies, rivalries, friendships, and a whole lot of great table tennis. The event is set down for 16-17 October, 2026. Registrations open soon.
Spectacular times
Two days of exciting action eventuated when the 2026 HR Engineering/RJ Mac Contracting Rarangi Spectacular golf tournament was staged at the seaside course on 24-25 January. At the end of proceedings Andrea Thomas and Paula Bavin were crowned as women’s champions, while Jake Nurse and Lee Williams claimed the men’s title.
Warriors come calling
MBC athlete Vilikesa Nawaqavonovono has been selected in the NZ Warriors Harold Matthews Cup under-19 rugby league squad. Vilikesa was a member of the MBC First XV rugby side last season and represented the Navigators rugby league club.
