Uncorked

Evan Tuchinsky

“The only constant is change.” Heard that expression? I did at some point, and it stuck. So did this one: “If you’re standing still, you’re falling behind.”

Since catching the short pass from William Woodworth as he sprinted to go north, I have locked my eyes on the goal line.  There’s no replacing Billy; if I can keep my grip on the ball and avoid turnovers, that’s my try.

This issue marks my second with Peter Jones as my close support. You may notice a few changes on the pages. Along with the rest of the Weekly whanau, Pete makes sure I keep things Kiwi. (Mantra of the moment: “on Wednesday” instead of just “Wednesday” …)

Readers who look at page-top labels will have noticed the two sections which debuted last week. Business is the home of Frank Nelson’s Business Beat column and, on alternate weeks, news and features on Marlborough commerce. Arts & Culture, likewise, is a dedicated space for music, theatre, visual art and other creative outlets.

This edition, Opinion is the change. We adjusted how it looks for community comments – Thoughts of the Week – and launched the column you’re reading, called Uncorked as an homage to Marlborough plus a wink to its aim.

Why add this? Ego fulfilment of a tall poppy? Well …

The idea sparked when my introduction, “New kid on the block”, drew affirming reactions from a variety of people. Uncorked will offer updates on the Weekly and quick takes on news in our communities.

Before joining the Weekly as a writer, I was a reader. This publication is unique. I view Marlborough Weekly as a trusted friend – that is the tone I hope we accentuate throughout each issue. That is the goal line.

Please let me know how we are doing. Email any feedback, positive or negative, as well as any Thoughts of the Week and story ideas. Onward!
