Friday afternoon's wind took a toll in Blenheim Town Centre when a tree limb crashed onto a car driving on Maxwell Road by the Rangitane building.
According to a bystander, the "large branch" fell onto the black SUV around 2:45pm. The driver and passenger both exited through the driver's side door, then were able to drive away.
Had the vehicle been a small car, the bystander surmised, damage might have been more serious.
Two hours later, crews were in the thick of thinning the tree's canopy. A worker suspended in the tree cut and dropped limbs that other workers corralled and chipped. Traffic in the lane stopped intermittently.
Police NZ had no additional information.
