The Kinzett family’s horticultural roots run more than a century deep in Marlborough, but things are changing at their prolific tomato-growing operation on Old Renwick Road.
The business, which sees hydroponic tomatoes basking under two hectares of glass all year round, has been merged into the MG (Market Gardeners) Group under a new lease agreement. This transfers full management and operations to Nelson-based JS Ewers, which is wholly owned by MG.
MG’s general manager of communications, Ellery Tappin, says Nicola Whyte (née Kinzett) and her husband, Tom, who have led the operation in recent years, will be stepping away. However, around 20 existing permanent staff will retain their roles, supported by many other seasonal workers.
The black cloud generated by the recent, sudden closure of Blenheim’s Kathmandu store – widely considered a prestige brand of active, outdoor clothing, footwear and camping equipment -- may yet have a tiny silver lining.
Kylie Cornelius, Marlborough Chamber of Commerce executive officer, hopes that shoppers searching for alternatives outlets will now spend a little more money with local retailers such as Mitchell Sports.
There may also be some spillover for the likes of Macpac and Mountain Warehouse which, though not locally-owned, still provide jobs and contribute to the health of the local economy.

The word “Heli-Gin” may not have entered the popular lexicon yet, but it already describes a treat being offered to tourists in Kaikoura, particularly targeting those with deep pockets.
Heli-Gin is a cooperative venture between Mt Fyffe Distillery – Justine Schroder’s boutique gin business located just north of the township – and locally based South Pacific Helicopters.
Mt Fyffe sells mostly from the cellar door, with people driving up to the perch about 170m above sea level. But whether they drive or indulge in the bespoke chopper trip, Justine says all are equally wowed by the incredible views.
Mt Fyffe’s Shearwater and Woolshed gins can also be found in Blenheim-area outlets Roots Gin Shack, Astrolabe and Arbour, plus Sisu in Picton.

The Portage Bay Hub – an accommodation and food business, just a stone’s throw along Kenepuru Road from the famed Portage Resort – is enjoying a successful first summer despite having to grapple with the intermittent closure of Kenepuru Road for ongoing repairs.
The complex offers a range of accommodation options that together can sleep up to 18 people, with access just a few minutes away to 12 more beds at Portage Paradise and Tree Tops.
The Hub has a café offering meals, snacks and ice creams, and manager Leeann O’Neill says they have also been busy providing accommodation, transport and baggage services for those walking the Queen Charlotte Track.
