The prized Newman Shield cricket trophy is back in Marlborough hands after a lengthy absence.
At Saxton Oval on Sunday, the Marlborough senior men’s rep side completed a decisive eight-wicket victory over arch-rivals Nelson to wrestle the silverware away.
In recent times Marlborough have played second fiddle to the Nelson Griffins, including a six-wicket loss in the first Newman Shield challenge this season, played late last year.
However, they emphatically turned the tables in the 50-over clash on Sunday, bowling and fielding consistently well to restrict the home side to 192 all out in the 46thover on a batter-friendly deck, then recovering from the loss of a couple of early wickets to forge a match-winning partnership, finishing on 194-2.
Marlborough won the toss at Saxton and elected to bowl, picking up wickets at regular intervals throughout their innings as Nelson struggled to establish meaningful partnerships, their best being 44 for the seventh wicket.
Opener Andrew Beatson, 36 from 58 balls, held things together in the early stages before number five Sam John added a patient 47 from 73 and Sean Neal chipped in with 25 from 38, but it always seemed a below-par score.
Player-coach James Bell led the wicket-taking stakes, bagging 3-39 from his full complement of 10 overs, while Sam Boyce, 2-30 from seven, Greg Knowles, 2-24 from eight, Griffin Carter, 2-43 from nine, performed with accuracy and control, ensuring the home side worked hard for their runs. The Marlborough bowlers were superbly supported in the field, anything going to hand being pouched.
Batting has often been Marlborough’s Achilles heel this season and when they were 2-13 in the fourth over, with openers Joel Lavender and Greg Knowles back in the shed, it seemed they may be following suit.
However, the combination of talented youngster Luke Holdaway and veteran Andrew McCaa, playing what he suggests is his final rep game, proved irresistible.
Batting calmly and professionally, the duo put together a superb 181-run unbroken partnership, defying anything the eight bowlers the Griffins called on could throw at them.
Andrew finished on an unbeaten 94 from 131 balls with nine fours and one six while Luke scored 71 not out from 120 balls with seven fours and two sixes to wrap up proceedings.
They managed to maintain a healthy scoring rate throughout, ensuring there was little danger of running out of overs, allowing Luke to seal victory in the 44thover with a well-struck six.
Opening bowler Ben Neale, 1-28 from 10, was the pick of the home attack but the day well and truly belonged to the visitors.
James was thrilled to claim the coveted trophy, last held on this side of the hill during the 2020-21 season.
“It was brilliant. We caught everything in the field and the bowlers bowled very well. It was tough because the wicket wasn’t offering much for the bowlers but everyone just stuck at it very well. It was a real team effort in the field – everybody chipped in and we didn’t miss any key chances.
“It was an under-par score from them and although we lost a couple of early wickets Andrew and Luke just made it look really easy. They both hit the bad balls away and respected the decent deliveries … it was pretty comprehensive.
“At the start of the season we set out to get our hands on [the Newman Shield] and it is very rewarding to finish our season on a high.”
