Summa Bruning gives EMS Training a go

If you’re anything like me, life is already full. Kids, work, deadlines, errands, and the general chaos of “everything.” You want to feel fitter, maybe lose a bit of weight that refuses to budge, and your joints are starting to complain more than they used to. You also know, deep down, you’re never going to be that person who happily springs out of bed at 5am for a gym session. Motivation tends to disappear the moment I think, “Right, I’m going to get healthy.”

So when Danielle Blackmore, owner of Peak20 and professional personal trainer, contacted me about trying EMS Training, I was instantly curious. Mostly because I’d never heard of it, and partly because it required very little time. My first thought was, “I’ll believe that when I try it.”

Six weeks later, here we are.

So what exactly is EMS Training? The easiest way to describe it is like doing a short, low-intensity workout while wearing what feels like a futuristic superhero suit. You do simple movements – squats, lunges, curls etc – but the suit delivers low-frequency electrical stimulation that triggers deep muscle contractions at the same time. Not just the muscles you’re actively using, but up to 90% of your muscles simultaneously.

It’s weird, like a strong full-body tingling that makes your muscles tense, but it’s not painful. Just different.

Don’t get me wrong, EMS Training isn’t going to transform you back to your 20-year-old self, but it can support you as you age, especially if you haven’t been able to commit to other routines that fit your schedule.

Each session lasts only 20 minutes but is often compared to a two-hour gym workout (assuming you’re working hard and doing everything right, which, let’s be honest, many of us don’t).

After my first session, I walked away thinking, “I can’t believe how exhausted I feel.” My legs were shaking, yet it seemed like I had barely done anything. One unexpected bonus – no sweaty gym aftermath. I changed back into my office clothes and went straight back to work.

For two days my muscles ached, something was definitely working. To test it, I repeated the same exercises at home without the suit and barely raised my heart rate. That’s when I realised the suit really did have superpowers.

The bigger reality check for me has been age. At some point, you realise future-you is going to wish present-you had taken body health more seriously. Through working with Danielle, I’ve learned how important muscle building is, not just for appearance but for metabolism, mobility, balance, posture, joint support and bone density. Danielle also makes it clear that achieving good body health is about a balanced approach. Eating habits play a major role, along with making sure you’re getting other forms of exercise like walking or playing sport, which support cardiovascular health.

I’ve always resisted paying for fitness memberships because technically you can exercise for free. Good intentions don’t count as workouts though. What I like about EMS Training is that it removes my biggest barrier – time. I can commit to 20 minutes once or twice a week, and the sessions are guided so I’m not guessing if I’m doing things right.

Based on the Inbody scan, I’ve already gained 1kg of muscle, and that’s just in 1 hour and 20 minutes of EMS Training.

Cost-wise, when you compare it to regular personal training or a gym membership you actually use five times a week, it stacks up surprisingly well, especially considering the time saved. Danielle’s support also goes beyond the session itself, with practical advice around general health and wellbeing.

For the first time in a long time, I’ve found something I can realistically stick with. I already feel better, stronger, and more motivated than I expected to. In fact, I’ve signed up for the year – which might be the most convincing review I can give.

Does this sound like something you want to try?
