The Marlborough Art Society is inviting the community to explore the Golden Era of Classic Cars, a new exhibition celebrating the cars, architecture, clothing, and social settings of the 1950s through the 1980s.

The idea grew from a desire to connect with other local organisations. Anne Barrer, committee member and immediate past president, says the Society “always looks for opportunities to link with the community. This exhibition brings together art, history, and a shared appreciation of the era”.

Support from Ron Stewart of Omaka Classic Cars was instrumental in shaping the show. Ron generously provided classic vehicles and facilitated opportunities for local artists to work directly alongside them, drawing inspiration from the cars’ design, style, and character. Artists were encouraged to consider not only the vehicles but also the architecture and social settings of the time.

At the preview show on Friday 20 March, starting at 6pm, visitors will be able to see the finished artworks alongside classic cars in the carpark, courtesy of Ron, and a small display of costumes and memorabilia from the Historical Society.

Anne encourages visitors to get into the spirit by dressing in period-inspired outfits: “We would love it if people dressed up in 50s, 60s, 70s or 80s style and there will be prizes on the night!”

The exhibition also includes a selection of artworks from the Society’s collection, including “Village Green” by Celina Ballantine, Marlborough Arts Society’s first life member in 1963. “This piece beautifully depicts the Blenheim village green in the 1960’s.”

The overall works that will be on display offer a thoughtful look at the everyday life, buildings, and social culture of the 50s through 80s, inviting visitors to reflect on a bygone era.

Running for two weeks, from 21 March until 5 April, the exhibition is a collaborative effort between the Marlborough Art Society, Omaka Classic Cars, and the Historical Society and is designed for locals to explore the artists creativity through the charm and style of decades past.

Whether you are a fan of classic cars, local art, or simply curious about the past, this exhibition offers a thoughtful, nostalgic experience of history, design, and artistic interpretation.
