Worried about water
Re: “How low can the Wairau go?”
I thought the Southern Valleys’ Irrigation Scheme had thresholds that once met would release water back into the river? That was the whole point behind its establishment, as well to better regulate and stop water take renewals.

My yard that I lease from Marlborough District Council is right beside the Wairau River. There is at least two to three metres more gravel in the river than there has ever been. When they do an extraction and contractors remove gravel, it’s just like chickens scratching around a coop – they only just take a little bit off the surface. Leaseholders are extremely concerned and apprehensive about the next big flood that comes.

Been bugger all rain up country; that’s why the river is low.

From regular observation, it was lower this time last year.

When the vineyards run out of water, it will be a crisis, and most certainly not at any other point.
