North Island braces for cyclone due Sunday

MetService has issued several severe weather warnings for much of the North Island as Cyclone Vaianu approaches the country.

The cyclone is expected to move southwards across the North Island on Sunday.

A strong red warning has been issued for Coromandel Peninsula and Great Barrier Island from 5am to 6pm Sunday.

Several orange heavy rain warnings have been issued across North Island for the weekend.

These include Northland, Auckland, Coromandel Peninsula, Bay of Plenty and Gisborne.

There are also orange strong wind warnings for Northland, Auckland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Gisborne and Taranaki.
