Moving the Marlborough region from a watch to a warning, MetService updated the weather alert for today (Sunday, 12 April) as Cyclone Vaianu arrived on the North Island.

The swath of eastern Marlborough and northeastern Canterbury remained the only South Island area with an advisory. However, as of early morning, that is now an orange warning with "a minimal chance" of becoming a red warning.

MetService indicates people in "Eastern Marlborough, especially between Blenheim and Kaikoura, and about the Richmond Range" to "expect 70 to 100 mm of rain to accumulate" with "peak rates of 20 to 30 mm/h expected Sunday afternoon."

The warning runs from 9am to 11pm.

Regarding impacts: "Streams and rivers may rise rapidly. Surface flooding, slips, and difficult driving conditions [are] possible."
