The Marlborough senior A competition kicked off under grey skies across the province today.
Three matches were played, all at country venues, producing hard-fought battles throughout the “grassroots” grade.
At the Renwick domain, the local Mud Dogs side put the challenge trophy on the line against Central, and came away with a tradesman-like 37-14 victory.
The home side, led around the park by veteran front rowers Nick Dickson and Ty Bampton, plus the evergreen Sam White, took control early, establishing field position before cashing in with close-range attacks. A highlight was an individual effort by right winger Brody Price, the youngster showing pace and ball skills to score a long range try.
Halfback Jarrod Ferguson played solid wet weather footy to guide the backline.
Central, led by versatile first five Liam Young who slipped into the role of lineout jumper when required, stayed in the contest throughout, scoring twice. Flanker Francis Roebeck provided momentum while Nick Malins was solid at the back.
However, this was definitely the Mud Dogs’ day, showing the sort of allround attack and willing defence that will serve them well this campaign.
In other results, Waitohi defeated Pelorus 28-6 at Endeavour Park, Picton and Moutere squeezed past Awatere 10-5 in Seddon.
Premiers
The Central premier side travelled to Motueka for a clash with Kahurangi and came away empty-handed. The Blues went down 29-19, scoring three tries, but had no answer for the home team, who picked up five tries and rebounded quickly from a first round reversal.
In other results, Marist beat Stoke 45-8 and Waimea Old Boys beat Nelson 43-15.
