Storm forecast over King's Birthday

Evan Tuchinsky

People spending King's Birthday weekend in northwest Marlborough could encounter disruptive weather per an orange alert in place for the area.

MetService issued a heavy rain warning for Richmond and Bryant Ranges, including the Rai Valley, from noon Sunday through 4am Tuesday, with a "low chance" of the alert rising to red.

Saturday's forecast indicated 300mm to 400mm of rain from the storm with rates peaking at 15mm to 25mm per hour.

MetService cautioned that water levels in rivers and streams may rise quickly and that surface flooding and slippery road conditions could make driving difficult.

Marlborough District Council offices will be closed for the holiday, but residents requiring assistance can phone 03 520 7400.
