Actors prepare for the Into the Labyrinth: A Tangled Tale show at Blenheim Musical Theatre this weekend.
A student-led vote sparked the creation of an ambitious original production that blends humour, mythology and teamwork on stage.
Director Samantha Baxter says Into the Labyrinth: A Tangled Tale grew out of a desire to build on the success of last year’s play while giving more students the chance to shine.
After presenting five options to her class, Baxter says a Greek mythology-inspired show was the clear favourite.
“I began writing Into the Labyrinth: A Tangled Tale last year,” she says. “From the beginning, my goal was to create a production that would give as many students as possible the opportunity to be involved on stage and have speaking roles.”
That goal has shaped a production unlike previous shows, with most of the cast remaining on stage throughout.
“What makes this production particularly unique is the level of involvement from the cast,” Baxter says. “They work together as a dynamic chorus, taking on multiple characters and even helping to create elements of the set and environment through movement and performance.”
The result is a lively, fast-paced performance that draws on a wide range of Greek myths, weaving them into one “tangled” story.
“We bring the concept to life through imaginative costuming, unexpected character pairings and clever staging choices,” she says.
Costumes have been one of the biggest challenges, with each character needing a distinct look despite the traditional toga theme. Characters such as Cerberus, the three-headed dog, have required especially creative solutions, with students stepping up to design and produce memorable results.
For Baxter, watching students embrace those challenges has been a highlight of rehearsals.
“Watching students bring these unique characters to life has definitely been one of the highlights of the rehearsal process,” she says.
Above all, Baxter hopes audiences leave entertained and inspired.
“The show is full of humour, energy and heart, and we hope audiences enjoy every moment of the journey.”
