When it comes to performing arts in Marlborough, more often than not, Kevin Moseley appears centre stage.

He debuted as a brass musician 60 years ago and continues to play. For 30 years of that span, he conducted the Marlborough District Brass Band. Meanwhile, as Marlborough Civic Theatre Trust’s longtime chair, he was instrumental (pun partially intended) in developing the region’s signature performance venue.

So, under the spotlight of Marlborough’s Local Legend, it is time for Kevin’s bow.

Kevin played for the Blenheim Municipal Band (now the district brass band) and the Operatic Society (now the trust) in the final years of His Majesty’s Theatre – then at its successor, the Floor Pride Civic Theatre, which served the community for three decades. That gave way to ASB Theatre (now Whitehaven Theatre) in 2016.

Kevin championed the project from consents, design and fundraising through the final cleanup, grand opening and its first decade of operations. The main performance hall seats 700, up from 444 at Civic Theatre, and can accommodate large-scale touring shows and local artists alike.

Amid this activity, Kevin continues to teach music and to give back to the community in myriad ways, including as a member (and 2025-26 President) of Blenheim South Rotary.

Whitehaven Theatre’s 10th year coincides with the trust’s 50th. Kevin received a well-deserved ovation at the 29 May celebration “Curtain Up” – this honour marks a curtain call. Encore, encore!
