SH1 closed past Kaikōura

SH1 between Kaikōura and Cheviot in North Canterbury closed Tuesday morning because of rising river levels, as well as Inland Kaikōura Road.

With SH63 closed between Kawatiri Junction and Howard Valley Road due to treefalls, NZTA advised that "people travelling between Picton and Christchurch will have to use the inland route via SH6 / SH65 / SH7 /SH1."

Travelling via Nelson, Murchison, Springs Junction and Waipara "is a longer route and will require extra travel time."

NZ Police reported the closure of Inland Kaikōura Road; "Cribb Creek has burst its banks, and Cribb Creek Bridge is unsafe to drive along."
