SH1 remains on track to reopen early in the week, NZTA reported, as "good progress is being made" by work crews clearing and repairing sections of the Marlborough-Canterbury coastal route damaged by flooding from the red-level rainstorm.
Tuesday is "likely to be the earliest opportunity" for vehicles to return to the roadway "if the weather holds" and work continues on pace, NZTA projected.
SH1 between Kaikōura and Cheviot remained closed on Sunday morning, as did Inland Route 70 (Inland Kaikōura Road) to the west of Kaikōura. A detour has routed traffic via SH7, SH65, SH6 and SH63.

For motorists taking alternate routes, NZTA advises "to expect ongoing severe frosts and icy conditions in inland areas" through Monday.
