Matariki returned on Friday with a series of events across Marlborough, bringing whānau and friends together to celebrate the Māori New Year.

Marking the rising of the Matariki star cluster, 10 July brings a time of remembrance along with celebrating our present and looking to the future. Matariki this year once again brought together Marlburians to recognise the rich culture and spirit of Wairau and Aotearoa.

Before dawn, hundreds gathered at Ūkaipō (the Rangitāne Cultural Centre) to participate in karakia, karanga and to observe Matariki rising, prior to watching the National Hautapu ceremony. Everyone received complimentary kai (food) and inu (drinks) to enjoy.

Rangitāne originally planned to start the morning at Wairau Bar, down the coast from a gathering at Rarangi Beach. Severe storm weather earlier in the week prompted moving the whole celebration to Ūkaipō.

The following afternoon and evening, Vines Village hosted a lively Matariki night market, which also drew hundreds of attendees. More than 25 vendors offered a wide variety of kai and inu, alongside paintings, warm clothing, metalwork and goods from the site’s regular stores.

Live music from Simon Byrne filled the village throughout Saturday evening while visitors embarked upon a treasure hunt, experienced a custom-built Nordic sauna, listened to storytellers, enjoyed face painting, and took part in various activities hosted by Omaka Observatory.

As the sun set, fire dancers drew a large crowd with their performances through the closing of the market.
