“Winter Dawn ... View from the Burleigh Bridge”, by Liz Davidson, photographed 1 July.
Haiku has three lines:
five beats, seven beats, five beats.
Wait, writing takes math?

shares poetry of this form;
read it, then try it?
Breaking from the rhythmic structure: Nancy Sherwood challenged her Wairau Valley tai chi students to create haiku.
Here are some poems she and they created.
SOUND
Buzzing of chainsaws
Starlings chatting on the wires
Peaceful countryside?
SIGHT
Mountains, fold on fold
Majestic macrocarpas
Vineyards bare of leaves
TOUCH
Beanie covers ears
Frosty fingers warmly gloved
Toes in woolly socks
SMELL
Smoke is on the air
Herbal scents around the yard
Comfort food for tea
TASTE
Smooth rich porridge, hot
Perfect way to start the day
With a slosh of cream
ADVENTURING
Wagging tail leads us
Uphill then down - bush to sea
Bob’s Bay discovered
BAROMETER
Dog barometer
Canine eyes reflect my mood
Wake me up to me
HORSES
Horses in the field
Swishing tails and stamping feet
Wickering softly
REVISITING
When an old dog dies
It comes back to us each day
Reminders of love
NIGHT
Day gives way to night
Silence falls like gentle breath
Drifts on peaceful dream
SOLSTICE
The orb of the moon
In the notch of the mountains
On the shortest day
WINTER
Morning frost on grass
Icy shards like broken glass
Crunch as my feet pass
UNTITLED
Feet sink in the sand
Standing firm just like a tree
Storms pass and sun shines
