Hospice backers pack Fabric-a-brac

Fabric-a-brac Marlborough was any keen crafter’s ultimate playground. Cars filled the streets around Connect Blenheim on Saturday (18 July) as fabric lovers rushed to secure best-value selections.

“There was a line of about 50 at the door before opening!” event coordinator Tracy Johnstone remarked.

Fabric-a-brac raises money for Hospice Marlborough. The annual market is entirely volunteer run, including many of the regular hospice shop helpers. All fabric is supplied by the hospice shop, where many people donate their fabric stash in lieu of attending the event.

All proceeds from the event, featuring a raffle along with sales, directly benefit the charity organisation. Donated baked goods and barista-made coffee were also available for purchase.

Saturday’s attractions included upcycled handbags, sewing books, crafts, embroidery, and a sewing machine technician. In terms of fabric itself, the range was expansive, with beautiful retro designs and fun modern patterns.

Stallholders were able to display and sell their own collections and creations. Some came from around the country. Fabric-a-brac is a nationwide happening, with 12 events around New Zealand.

Anyone who was unable to attend the market does not have to stay empty-handed. The hospice shop in Redwoodtown is holding the Mop-Up Pop-Up sale through this Saturday (25 July). Visit hospicemarlborough.org.nz for hours.
