Wairau Diversion’s oceanside end takes some time and a good suspension to reach. Off Neal Road, east of SH1 at Tuamarina, pothole-laden gravel roads along both edges of the waterway lead visitors to havens for fishing, driftwood and seashells.
The southern route has stayed open this winter. Across the northern side, however, a secure metal gate blocks access to the final stretch to the beach – just a few metres from signs which state “responsible camping zone begins”.
What’s the story with the closure?
Turns out, it’s temporary. Parks and Open Spaces Manager Jane Tito explained that Council “asked our contractor to do a mow and tidy up of the area before we open the gate at the Hinepango Wetland to the public.”
When might that be? “We would like to open it by Saturday 1 August,” Jane said.
Plenty of time to get new shock absorbers.
