Community: Growing familiar

Life settles into routines. We grow accustomed to familiar things. We get used to daily rhythms, regular sights, patterns of speech, comfort food (gastronomic and metaphoric) … OK, point made.

This week’s Community page reflects that sentiment. We have a poem about acclimation plus a photo of our home region from a regular contributor.

Noemie Guerin came to New Zealand from France a decade ago, recently moving from Northland to Marlborough. The collection of haikus in the 15 July issue inspired her to submit some poetry she penned.

In explaining her piece, she wrote: “Like many people, I have an accent when I speak English — but it’s not a Kiwi accent! This poem reflects on that aspect of everyday life.”

The photo shared here is the third from Liz Davidson in as many weeks. She keeps capturing Marlborough’s majesty with distinct artistry.

On this image of a Blenheim creek at sunset, she noted: “When I arrived at this view spot it was almost dark. I thought that would make a [subpar] photo. But Photoshop Express on my iPhone and some minor tweaking brought out the lovely vista and winter evening tones. Magic!”

Just days earlier, following the red-level storm, “this area of vineyards was underwater”.
