Marlborough’s Local Legend: Marianne Govaerts

Some people seem to possess an extra selflessness gene; an instinct to notice when others are struggling and step forward without hesitation. Marianne Govaerts is such a person and has been described as the Mother Teresa of Picton.

A long-standing manager of the local St Vincent de Paul shop, she has helped provide a lifeline for countless people facing hardship in the town. Her work reaches far beyond running a charity shop. She doesn’t hesitate to put her hand up when there is a need.

Marianne combines compassion with action. She finds clothing, food, practical assistance and reassurance when required, while also speaking publicly about the growing pressures facing vulnerable families and the community organisations supporting them.

Recently, she has helped draw attention to the increasing number of people turning to local charities because they cannot access help quickly enough elsewhere. Her willingness to speak plainly about poverty, housing insecurity and the strain on community services has made her an important advocate for those whose voices are too often unheard.
