Kaikōura-into-Marlborough decision due Thursday

Waves of weighty questions, preliminary answers and pulse-check surveys will crescendo on Thursday morning when Marlborough decides whether to merge with Kaikōura.

Councillors’ 9am meeting in chambers features a vote on amalgamation, something the neighbouring southern district must do under legislation streamlining local governance.

Government’s filing deadline is Sunday; however, Kaikōura and Marlborough received an extension until 28 August to accommodate recovery from last month’s red-warning storm.

At an extraordinary meeting last Thursday, Marlborough councillors unanimously directed staff to complete a proposal to review. That followed results of a flash poll indicating two-thirds of Marlburians support the merger.

Mayor Nadine Taylor acknowledged the 20-29 July survey offered only a “temperature check” of preferences, and should Marlborough opt to proceed, Council will conduct “a full consultation” before the March deadline for finalised proposals.

Thursday’s agenda also includes an item tabled last week related to Marlborough Waters Ltd.
