Book review: A Year at Awakino Station by Jaz Mathisen

The 18,500-acre Awakino Station is set in the Waitaki Valley, North Otago. Jay Mathison is station cook, mother of three children and partner of station owner Dan Devine.
A Year at Awakino Station has a dual purpose in terms of readership, for not only the farmer but also for the urban dweller giving a fascinating insight into daily and seasonal life on a fine wool sheep, cattle and deer station.
A real bonus is that the book is chocker full of good, hearty typically homestead recipes such as beef stew with herbed dumplings and fruit sponge pudding plus ways to how to preserve produce such as potatoes for winter months and pickling beetroot. In all, there are 30 recipes. It’s a beautifully illustrated and presented book of 317 pages.
